Provides clerical and administrative support to the Town Assessor, including data entry, filing, and document preparation for assessment records and the Grand List. Assists the public, attorneys, and bankers by providing information and helping complete tax-related forms. Updates property records using land records and CAMA software, including preliminary valuations and sketches, under the direction of the Assessor or Assistant Assessor. Uses standard office equipment and follows established procedures.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides clerical and administrative assistance to the Town Assessor, performs responsible recording and filing duties.
GENERAL DUTIES:
Receives oral or written instructions from the Town Assessor or Assistant Assessor. Plans and organizes work according to standard office procedures.
Performs typing, filing, data entry, including data entry for the valuation of real and personal property and related clerical tasks in the updating and maintenance of all assessment records including street card files, increase and penalty notices, etc. Performs filing and related clerical tasks in preparing the Grand List, required documents and reports. Uses a computer and other office equipment. Provides information and assistance to attorneys, bankers and the public. Assists the public in completing tax exemption applications and other forms, and updates electronic records. Records real estate transfers to update the street card file (CAMA database) using the land records and performing preliminary valuation as an incident to updating the records with new data on property characteristics (including sketching), subject to review of the value by the assistant assessor or assessor.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Verifies personal property forms and other forms as directed by the Town Assessor. Reviews and makes adjustments and corrections to motor vehicle assessment records. Responsible for processing elderly exemption and veteran’s exemption programs. Prepares sales-assessment ratio data for the State, and other reports, including among others, reports of valuation data. May update assessment maps by rough-drawing land splits, new subdivisions, etc. Types correspondence and reports from source materials or rough copy. Makes arithmetical computations. Assists in the valuation of motor vehicles and personal property. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives general supervision from the Town Assessor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a high school education with course work in business, English and commercial arithmetic and two years of general office experience., including at least one year in a Connecticut assessor’s or tax collector’s office and successful completion of Courses 1A and 1B of the Connecticut Certified Municipal Assessor certification courses.
