Job Title: Assistant Assessor
Salary: $23.50/hour
Hours: Monday 8:30-6:30; Tues & Wed 8-4 Thurs 8-12

Position Definition: Provides technical and office administrative assistance to the Assessor; organizes, and performs work related to the collection, processing, and entering of information into an automated record-keeping system to assist in the establishment of the town Grand List and related taxable property information.
General Duties:
- Receives oral or written instructions from Assessor.
- Organizes work according to standard office procedures.
- Establishes priorities within work assignment.
- Receives real estate, personal property, motor vehicle and related property information.
- Posts changes to the grand list by entering information into computer.
- Posts changes to field cards, comparable sales file, map index, summary cards, personal property records, and exemption files.
- Provides general information to lawyers, land- searchers, bank officials, and the general public; refers complex inquiries to the Assessor.
- Makes copies of assessment maps for the public as requested.
- Reviews deed and other instruments of conveyance to insure conformance to Assessor’s records.
- Observes strict confidentiality in maintaining restricted files and records.
- Assists elderly and members of public in filing for tax exemptions.
- Prepares statistical and narrative reports from original data or rough copy.
- Assists in valuing and preparations of motor vehicles for taxation.
- Maintains records of new building permits for fieldwork.
- Reports work accomplished to Assessor.
Additional Duties: Performs general receptionist duties. Types letters, street cards, reports, or forms from prepared material or rough copy. Composes routine letters or reports for review and signature by Assessor. Operates equipment including computer, map machine, and typewriter. Performs related duties as required.
Supervised By: Receives general supervision from the Assessor.
Qualifications Profile:
- The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a high school education and two years’ experience in general office work.
- Knowledge of office procedures, including filing, scheduling, posting and basic bookkeeping.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to acquire a working knowledge of laws, regulations and procedures pertaining to department.
- Ability to acquire skills to operate data and word processing equipment.
- Ability to maintain accurate files and records.
- Ability to perform accurate mathematical computations.
- Ability to deal cooperatively with others.
- Experience in working with real estate or land records desirable.
License or Certificate: Course work toward, or Certification as a Municipal Assessor desirable.
