Job Title: Assessment Technician

Salary: $25.33 per hour

Summary of Position: 

Position provides varied clerical, technical and office administrative assistance to the Assessor. Plan and organize work according to standard office procedures, perform typing, filing, data entry for valuation of real, motor vehicle and personal property. Perform motor vehicle adjustments and related clerical tasks in the updating and maintenance of all assessment records including street card files, increase and penalty notices, etc.  Assist in all aspects of Grand List preparation, including the administration of State and Local benefit programs.  

Responsibilities: responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain office, prepare various reports, general correspondence and a variety of administrative duties. 
  • Assists appraisers, realtors, attorneys, title searchers and the public with specialized information applicable to the Town. 
  • Under direction performs a variety of assessment tasks, including maintenance of accounts and preparation of reports using proprietary software programs related to technical assessment and tax billing systems.
  • Performs appraisal related duties of moderate complexity using a variety of software programs including Microsoft Office software.
  • Collects and verifies the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of assessment forms and information provided by the public and other agencies.
  • Maintains records of customer accounts and analyzes and prepares summary reports.
  • Enters and retrieves data from the computer or other devices using various software systems. 

Desired Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Ability to use computers with a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
  • Ability to organize and perform work independently.
  • Ability to plan and maintain record keeping and filing sequences and systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public to convey concise and accurate explanations of policies, procedures, and requirements via phone, verbally in person, by e-mail or other written communication.
  • Knowledge of the state statutes, guidelines, and regulations which pertain to property assessment, tax credit and exemption programs, or the ability to acquire such knowledge in a relatively short period.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including the use of computers for data entry and management. 

Education and Experience: 

Associate Degree plus one year of prior work experience in clerical or record keeping functions, preferably involving assessment or an appraisal related field. 

In lieu of the above, any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities may be considered at the discretion of the Town.
